Young Adult Literature

I love to read. I have a book problem, and a handy husband who can build bookshelves for me when I start to fill my others up. I read fiction and non-fiction. I love mysteries, romance, historical fiction, self-help books, religion commentaries, cookbooks, biographies, history commentaries, health and exercise related books, classics, literature and beach trash. I read everything, and I don't discriminate. I am a firm believer that books are written for my pleasure, and I can get just as much pleasure from a romance novel as I can a Pulitzer Prize winner. Its all about my mood and attention span.

My latest addiction is quite a regression...I have been enjoying young adult fiction. I recently discovered Stephanie Meyer's vampire romance series Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse. I adore her books, and I forget that I am reading books geared towards teenagers. I highly recommend these books for anyone who enjoys a good story, and the 4th and final book in the series will be released in August. I just finished Eclipse last night, and its going to be a long 5 months!

Mommy Guilt

Today I am talking about a different kind of Mommy Guilt...not the working mommy kind. The glad-to-have-a-break-from-my-kids kind. My parents picked up the boys on Tuesday evening, and we got them back Saturday. 4 nights and 3 1/2 days without kids. Mornings without the madness of getting two other crabby peeps ready for school. Quiet evenings, relaxing evenings, dinners at adult restaurants. Private time for Michael and me. I really enjoyed the time off. This morning was such a plunge back into the Monday Morning Madness. It is 8:30 and I am pooped. I missed JBO and Short Round, but I am so grateful that Michael and I had a break from the stress of parenthood. Rather than feel guilty about enjoying time away from my children, I am just going to be thankful that my children have fantastic grandparents.

Southerner in Mechanicsburg

I am freezing right now. It is in the low thirties and they are calling for snow flurries in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania today.

Weird. I am still sporting a sunburn from my Sunday afternoon at Lake Greenwood in the 65 degree weather. Several hundred miles north and a world away.

Camp Chevarim Here We Come!

Jackson and Alex have attended Kathwood Preschool year round since they were born. Easy, right? This year marked a new stress for our family--what do you do with a school-age child during the summer? I have asked many this question, and I have gotten suggestions for a different-camp-a-week, the YMCA, college/high school babysitters, church preschools that have summer programs for older kids, and my favorite...quit your job, you should be home with your kids anyway.

Michael's friend Karen told him about the Katie and Irwin Kahn Jewish Community Center. They offer Day at the J on days when public schools are closed, and they also offer a 10 week summer camp, Camp Chevarim. Michael and I checked it out today at lunch, and we not only signed BOTH boys up for camp, but we joined JCC. The boys now have 12 month access to a pool! JCC has wonderful fitness facilities, free babysitting, aerobics classes, dance classes, basketball courts, and Camp Chevarim. We are really excited that the camp accomodates young kids like Alex. He will be so thrilled to go to camp with his bro!

Bad Blogger!

Lots going on around here. There are not enough hours in the day to do everything I want and need to do. The house is a mess, I have very little personal time, but work and family are doing well.

I passed all 4 written tests required to get my CDL learner's permit! I finally did it yesterday. They knew me around the Shop Road DMV. It took three days of repeat testing until I finally passed air brakes, combo units, and doubles and triples. For those who don't know truckin', combo units are tractors and any length semi-trailer, and doubles are two trailers hooked together and triples are, natch, 3 trailers hooked together. I start my actual road training out in the boonies of South Carolina next Thursday!

My calendar is booking up with travel...some personal and a lot business. Next week I will be in Atlanta, and I leave on St. Patty's day for Baton Rouge. April is crazy! The fam is spending the first weekend of April in Charleston for the Bridge Run. The next weekend Michael and I will be in Miami. The NEXT weekend I go to Phoenix, and two weekends later I go back down to south Florida. Wow. I also just booked a trip to Hickory Knob State Park in June for training.

The lofts are sleepable! They look amazing, just need some paint. We are going to paint the boys' room this weekend in the rainy 50s weather, and hopefully we will get the lofts painted next weekend. The boys absolutely love them, and I am so proud of Michael for the quality of workmanship and design.

Finally, Weight Watchers continues! I lost 2.2 pounds this week. I have been hovering around the same weight for a few weeks, so it was nice to finally have a loss. The key seems to be never letting myself get hungry, pack a lunch box full of fruits and veggies for snacks, sticking to the Plan, and working out at 5 am.

Jackson wants a skateboard. He is 5 1/2. Isn't that too young?? I don't know what to do about it. It's not like he will be going down hills, on ramps, etc. He will probably just roll around our driveway, but still... It's a big step. They go from little sit-and-scoot riding toys to skateboards when you blink.
